Brother T.I. Murphy
Thomas Aloysius Murphy was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on September 5, 1896.
He chose the name “Ignatius” in his canonical year as a Christian Brother novice in 1916 and for the greater part of his life, became known as Brother TI.
His missioned life as a Christian Brother extended over a sixty-seven year period.
Throughout his life, he demonstrated a special love for deprived children.
Many an adult in St. John’s remembers with gratitude and affection, his thoughtful sensitivity and attention to their daily needs,
and his thoughtfulness extended also to the suffering relatives and friends of deceased ex-pupils.
He was a strong bridge between the early Brothers in St. John’s and those of the present generation, and he contributed tremendously to preserving and strengthening the hallowed traditions and spirit of the Congregation. TI led a truly dedicated life both in community and school. No matter what assignment given to him, be it that of classroom teacher, supervisor, principal or consultor – all received his wholehearted dedication.
Brother Thomas Ignatius Murphy died peacefully at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s on February 17th, 1983. He was 86 years old.
