The Community Youth Arts Project dedicates 66% of its program to volunteer service within the Community to non-profit organizations. Participants volunteer their time and artistic talent to community partners by painting murals on walls, sewing curtains, painting murals on masonite panels and doing art workshops with children in different schools and centers.

  • The first project was located within the new Youth Services Building located on Carter's Hill. The participants and Peer Mentor, Laura Casey took on projects within the DayBreak Family Resource Centre and within the area surrounding Choices for Youth and Community Youth Network

  • The DayBreak Family Resource Centre came to life like a children's' storybook when the participants painted birds, alphabet and other animals on the walls. A large tree centered on another wall with flowers and grass surrounding it. We built a swing into the tree that works well as a bookshelf. Laura painted the names of the agencies above the area each one occupies

  • The second project was at The Iris Kirby House where everyone helped out with murals and gardening! Murals were painted in the window of the kitchen and the children's area was completely redecorated and upgraded with murals and fun furniture, not to mention the curtains

  • We also participated in the Art Day at Cowan Heights Elementary where four participants held art workshops in cartooning, finger painting, jewelry making and drawing/painting. The kids had almost as much fun as we did!

  • We continued the art workshops at The MacMorran Community Centre where we did similar workshops, as well as added Sculpting with clay and Portraiture. We spent two full days at this centre entertaining staff and participants!

  • The Janeway is our latest venture! We are working diligently on murals on the psychiatric ward keeping it bright and comforting to the patients. Creative flare surrounds the area!
