Community Youth Arts Project
The Community Youth Arts Project offers youth aged 18-30 an opportunity to become members
of an arts collective. The project focuses on developing artistic and employability skills
through a 34 week studio and community service experience. This program is funded by HRDC.

Community, Career and Employment Services
The main goal of the Career and Employment project is to provide linkages and support to community
agencies and their programs. More specifically, to provide to community partners, a forum in which
they may explore issues, share and create solutions related to (HRLE) Career and Employment programs.

Employment Action
- EA is a paid 12-week work placement program.
- Participants are also offered assistance with job search, resume development and interview skills.
- Participants must have skills or training, be “job ready” and receiving income support (cannot be EI eligible)

Essential Skill & Work Based Initiative
Referral Information and Criteria
The Murphy Centre is inviting referrals for the Essential Skills and Work Based Initiative
Program. Essential Skills and Work based Initiative is delivered by the Murphy Centre Career
Services and is sponsored by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and administered by
the Department of Human Resources Labour and Employment.
Sixteen people, age 18 and over, will have the opportunity to participate in a 20 week career
development program. Participants must be willing to work 30 hours per week (20-30 in exceptional
cases). Participants will be given the opportunity to develop a career plan, get paid work
experience and acquire a variety of life and career skills. The participants will complete two
weeks of skills training initially followed by weekly sessions throughout the 20 week program.
The participants will complete 18 weeks of work placement with an employer. The program is fully
paid with participants receiving $8.50 per hour.
In order to participate in Essential Skills and Work Based Initiative, participants must meet
the following basic criteria:
- On income support
- Age 18 and over
- Demonstrated willingness to participate in the program
- Able to work 30 hours per week (20-30 in exceptional cases)
- Legally entitled to work according to provincial legislation and regulations.
- Out of school
- In need of assistance in order to overcome employment barriers
- Non E.I. eligible
In addition to the basic criteria, priority participants have at least one of the following
additional criteria:
- History of intergenerational dependency on income support
- Health, mental or drug and or alcohol related problems
- Demonstrate a lack of motivation to work
- Often not involved in a career plan
- Demonstrate significant gaps and deficits in life skills
- High school non-completion
- Single parent
- Street involvement
- Contact with the Justice System
- Low levels of literacy or numeracy
- Lack of Social Supports: family, friends or community supports
- Other

HRLE Outreach
- We have two Youth Outreach Coordinators whose goal is to support youth in becoming
connected with community resources. Through the support of community organizations,
youth have an opportunity to contribute to and strengthen society.
- The areas they cover are Bell Island, St. John’s, Mount Pearl & C.B.S.

Outreach, Assessment, & Case Management
Outreach
To engage youth who have had little contact with career/employment services by building partnerships with
existing youth-serving agencies to better identify & assist these youth.

Assessment & Case Management
- Provides assessment & case management to all youth interested in Service Canada sponsored Skills Link programs
in greater St. John’s area.
- Following assessment candidates are either recommended for Skills Link or referred to other services.
- Skills Link participants may be case managed for up to six years (until career goals are met).

Ready, Set, WORK!
The Ready, Set, WORK! project is a career development program for youth that focuses on basic employment readiness and personal development skills enhancement.
Ten (10) young people will be given the opportunity to participate in an 18 week pre-employment, skills enhancement training program that will include a variety of workshops/sessions such as:
- communication skills
- problem solving / critical thinking
- basic computer skills
- basic numeracy
- importance of a positive attitude
- self-esteem
- safety in the workplace
- time management
- lifelong learning
- conflict resolution
- working with others
- volunteerism
- portfolio development

Youth Empowerment Strategies
The Youth Empowerment Strategies (Y.E.S!) program is an individualized career development program for youth between the ages of 16 – 30 facing multiple barriers.
Participants in the program are assisted in identifying and overcoming personal barriers and empowered to achieve their employment, education, career and personal development goals. Opportunities are provided for participants to explore potential careers, learn job search skills, develop a resume, apply for educational upgrading or post-secondary education, and participate in numerous life skills development activities.
The Y.E.S. program is a progressive service with no fixed entrance or exit points. Participants may be referred by social workers, guidance counselors, teachers, and community agencies or through self-referral.

Youth Works Well
Youth Works Well allows 10 people between the ages of 18 and 30 the opportunity to participate
in a 45-week career development program. Participants selected will benefit from educational, career
and life-style enhancement opportunities in order to pursue a successful career plan.

The program focuses on work placements to allow participants to gain maximum amount of work
experience and to build a stronger portfolio including a solid work reference from the employment
placement. Participants are paid (current minimum wage) for 30 hours per week throughout the program.
Employers pay only a portion of the participant’s wage.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
If you have experienced significant barriers to employment and/or post-secondary education and are
willing to commit to a full-time 45-week program, this program may prove to be very beneficial for you!
Participants are expected to actively participate in the search for work placements. This includes
identifying possible employers, preparing a resume and cover letter, as well as going through the
interview and screening process involved.
