WHO WE ARE

  • Established in 1986 (original location pictured here), the Murphy Centre is a registered non-profit charitable organization. The Centre was named for Brother Thomas Ignatius Murphy in recognition of his lifetime work as an educator in St. John's.
  • Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, the Murphy Centre is the only learning centre of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Programs and services are delivered from three building sites within the city of St. John's:
    • 1 Prince Phillip Drive
    • 276 Torbay Road, Suite 201
    • Harbourside Studios, 74 Harbour Drive.

Within a challenging and respectful environment, the Murphy Centre provides individuals with opportunities for growth through the integration of creative learning experiences designed to achieve academic, career and life goals.

PHILOSOPHY

The Murphy Centre community acknowledges the immeasurable worth of all individuals and believes in their ability to make positive change in their lives.

WHAT WE DO

  • Provide academic, career/employment and lifestyle education opportunities to primarily young adults as well as others that need the service.
  • Through an integrated and wholistic approach to service delivery, the Murphy Centre works with people who have faced many barriers to education and employment and we assist them with finding a renewed spirit of hope for continued learning and employment.
  • The collaboration and linkage of services is delivered through a General Framework Model in an atmosphere of community support.
  • Programs & Services are offered in the following core areas:
    • Academic: Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Credit Program
    • Life Style Education: Personal Development Courses, Journaling Group, Community Relations, Cooking Program, The Women's Group and Individual Support Services.
    • Career and Employment: Career Education and Development, Community Youth Arts, Employment Action, Experience Ireland, Mentoring Connections, Youth Empowerment Strategies, and Youth Works Well.

HOW WE DO IT

  • The Murphy Centre provides a second chance to individuals. As an alternative learning centre youth participate in individualized programs and services, develop an understanding of their particular learning style, design a career path and outline the steps necessary to achieve academic, career and life goals.
  • Participants primarily range in ages from 17 to 29 years of age, with 22 being the average age. However, some participants are in their 30's, 40's or 50's.
  • The annual participant population is approximately 340 participants with service breakdown as follows:
